About Art as Action

Founded in Boulder, Colorado in January 2002, Art as Action is a grassroots movement of artists and activists whose mission is to use the power of collaborative art to create social change. Repeatedly, art has proven to be an extraordinary way to inspire and unite a community. Art as Action uses this to bring global awareness to local artists and audiences. Our performances are composed of original pieces connected by a common theme and created by a diverse group of artists. We are comprised of members of various art communities including dance, circus arts, music, film, poetry, visual art and aerial dance. Each artist is encouraged to collaborate and transcend the boundaries between art genres, thereby creating a collage of diverse artistic pieces representing an extensive range of talents, ideas and backgrounds. Art as Action provides the support and the structure that empowers artists to produce entertaining, powerful and socially relevant work of professional caliber.

We express human issues through art.

Art as Action promotes art as social responsibility. Our performers are all people-of-conscience who are committed to contributing to the local and global community. Beyond just creating impactful art, Art as Action contributors take a community-activist role. By taking on the dual roles of advocate and educator in addition to creative artist and entertainer, the organization and performers have tackled serious and difficult themes, such as the changing shape of the American family and violence against women.

Everyone has a voice.

Art as Action is a 100% volunteer organization. In addition to our five full scale productions, Art as Action has helped bring art deeper into the community by participating in various community events including Mayfest at BMOCA, The Hometown Fair, Dance is for Everybody and Boulder Creek Festival. We have also hosted dance classes for under-privileged youth as a part of The Dairy Center for the Arts' ART HAPPENS program and National Dance Day in Denver. In addition, Art as Action was invited to participate in Dancers TURN OUT for Katrina Relief an all-star benefit in September 2005.

We invite you to join the artivist movement as an artist, a volunteer, a sponsor or an audience member.
